Sir Cyril Burt was the most decorated educational psychologist Britain had produced: the first psychologist to be knighted, an architect of the 11-plus, the man whose twin studies seemed to settle the oldest argument in the subject. His identical twins, reared apart, showed IQ correlations so high that intelligence looked overwhelmingly inherited — and that conclusion helped justify sorting eleven-year-olds into grammar schools and secondary moderns, a decision that shaped a child's whole life. Burt's data were quoted in textbooks and Acts of Parliament alike.
Then, after his death in 1971, the numbers began to look too good. Leon Kamin noticed that Burt's correlation coefficients stayed identical to three decimal places even as his sample supposedly grew — a statistical impossibility. Journalists could find no trace of his two research assistants, Margaret Howard and J. Conway, who had apparently collected the twin data; some concluded they had never existed. Whether Burt was a fraud or merely careless is still argued, but the case is the perfect gateway to this section, because it is every debate at once: the nature-nurture question it claimed to answer, the determinism baked into 'your IQ is fixed at birth', and above all the social sensitivity of research that decided which children were written off at eleven. Issues and debates is the synoptic paper — the one that asks you to stand above the sixteen topics and judge the assumptions underneath them all.
ModelGender and culture bias — whose psychology is it?
Psychology aspires to universality — findings true of all people — but its history is largely research by Western men, on Western men, generalised to everyone. Two kinds of gender bias distort the picture. Alpha bias exaggerates the differences between men and women, often devaluing women: Freud's account of the weaker female superego is the stock example. Beta bias minimises or ignores differences, typically by studying men and assuming women are the same — early fight-or-flight research ran on male animals and men, missing Taylor's later 'tend-and-befriend' pattern in women. Both feed androcentrism, a male-centred norm against which female behaviour is judged deviant; Carol Gilligan's critique of Kohlberg's moral-development theory — built from an all-male sample, on which women scored 'lower' — is the classic named case.
The same logic applies across cultures. Ethnocentrism judges other cultures by the standards of one's own: Ainsworth's Strange Situation, designed in the United States, treats the American secure-attachment pattern as the ideal and labels, for instance, the independent behaviour common in German infants as 'insecure' — an imposed etic, a home-grown tool assumed to travel. The corrective is cultural relativism: understanding behaviour, and even definitions of abnormality, within the culture that produces it rather than against a single imported yardstick.

Do we author our own behaviour, or is every act the inevitable product of prior causes? Hard determinism says all behaviour is caused and free will is an illusion; soft determinism (William James, and the cognitive approach) says behaviour is caused but we still exercise meaningful choice within those constraints. Determinism comes in three shades, one per approach: biological determinism (genes, hormones and neurochemistry — the 'warrior gene' MAOA variant offered as an excuse for violence), environmental determinism (Skinner's claim that we are shaped entirely by conditioning histories), and psychic determinism (Freud's insistence that unconscious conflicts drive us, so there are no accidents, only revealing slips).
Ranged against all of this is free will, the founding assumption of the humanistic approach (Rogers, Maslow) and of everyday moral and legal responsibility — we punish people because we assume they could have chosen otherwise. The evidence is genuinely double-edged: Libet's famous experiment found that the brain's readiness potential fires a fraction of a second before a person is consciously aware of deciding to move, which looks like determinism catching free will red-handed — though critics note that a conscious 'veto' over the impulse may still be free. The examiner's reward here is refusing the caricature: most modern positions are interactionist, and the strongest determinist argument is simply that science itself assumes causes it can find.
MechanismNature, nurture and the space between them
The oldest debate asks how much of behaviour is heredity (nature — genes inherited from parents) and how much is environment (nurture — everything from prenatal nutrition to schooling). Twin studies are the engine: because identical (MZ) twins share 100% of their genes and fraternal (DZ) twins roughly 50%, a higher concordance rate in MZ pairs — for intelligence, schizophrenia, OCD — implicates genes. But no concordance ever hits 100%, which is itself the proof that environment always contributes.
The modern consensus rejects the either/or for the interactionist approach: nature and nurture are so entangled that separating them is often meaningless. The diathesis-stress model captures it — a genetic vulnerability (diathesis) only becomes disorder when an environmental trigger (stress) is present. Epigenetics goes further, showing that experience can switch genes on or off and even pass that setting to offspring, so the environment writes on the genome itself. The cleanest teaching case is PKU: a single-gene disorder whose devastating effects are entirely prevented by an environmental change — a low-phenylalanine diet. A purely genetic condition, undone by nurture. Once you see PKU, the debate stops being a tug-of-war and becomes a question of how the two forces combine.
MechanismHolism versus reductionism — how far down should you go?
Reductionism explains behaviour by breaking it into its simplest components; holism insists some phenomena only make sense as a whole, greater than the sum of their parts. Reductionism itself has levels. Biological reductionism explains behaviour through genes, neurotransmitters and brain structures — OCD as a serotonin imbalance. Environmental (stimulus-response) reductionism, the behaviourists' move, breaks complex behaviour into learned associations between a stimulus and a response. The organising idea is levels of explanation: the same behaviour — say, a compulsive hand-wash — can be described socio-culturally (a norm about cleanliness), psychologically (an anxiety-reducing ritual), physically (the muscle sequence), and neurochemically (low serotonin), each level a different lens on one act.
The trade-off is real. Reductionism is scientific and testable — it isolates variables and enables experiments and drug treatments — but risks being simplistic, explaining away a lived experience as 'just' chemistry and ignoring the social context that gives behaviour meaning. Holism (the humanistic approach, Gestalt psychology, Jahoda's whole-person model of mental health) preserves that meaning but is hard to test and offers few practical interventions. The sophisticated position, again, is interactionist: pick the level that fits the question, and remember that a lower level does not make a higher one false.
ModelIdiographic and nomothetic — one person or a thousand?
These two words name opposite research ambitions. The nomothetic approach seeks general laws that apply to everyone, built from large samples and quantitative data: Milgram's obedience percentages, the behaviourist laws of learning, most of what looks like 'proper science' in the subject. The idiographic approach studies the individual in depth to understand what makes them unique, typically through case studies and qualitative data: the amnesic patient HM, Freud's Little Hans, the humanistic focus on subjective experience.
Each is incomplete alone. The nomothetic law tells you the average but may describe no actual person and can lose the individual entirely — Milgram's 65% obedience rate says nothing about why the other 35% refused. The idiographic case gives rich, real detail but cannot generalise and leans on subjective interpretation. The mark-winning move is to show they complement: a single striking case study (HM) can overturn a general theory of memory and generate the hypotheses that nomothetic studies then test on many. Good psychology usually needs both — the law and the exception that tests it.
CaseEthical implications and socially sensitive research
Ethical issues (deception, consent) are about how participants are treated during a study; ethical implications are the wider consequences of the findings once they leave the lab — for the groups studied and for society. Some research is socially sensitive: Sieber and Stanley defined it as studies with potential consequences for the participants or the class of people they represent. Burt's twin data sorting children at eleven; Bowlby's maternal-deprivation theory used to keep mothers out of the workforce; research on race and IQ, or on the heritability of criminality — all carry a social charge that ordinary memory experiments do not.
Sieber and Stanley flagged four pressure points: the research question itself (does asking 'are one group less intelligent?' already do harm?), the methodology and treatment of participants (confidentiality matters more when the topic is stigmatising), the institutional context (who funds it, and to what end), and above all the interpretation and application of findings (how will politicians and the press use them?). The examiner's nuance is that avoiding sensitive topics is not the answer — sexuality, abuse and prejudice research has protected real people — so the duty is to conduct it responsibly, not to duck it.
A model AO3 paragraph on free will and determinism shows the machinery of a top-band evaluation. 'A strength of the determinist position is that it is consistent with the aims of science. Determinism assumes that behaviour has orderly, discoverable causes, which allows psychologists to predict and control behaviour — for example, the biological account of OCD as low serotonin has produced SSRIs that measurably reduce symptoms. This is a genuine advantage because it has given psychology practical, testable interventions and the credibility of a hard science. However, a hard-determinist stance sits awkwardly with the legal system, which assumes offenders exercised free will and could have chosen otherwise; a courtroom that accepted 'my genes made me do it' would collapse the idea of responsibility. This suggests that a purely determinist psychology is not only impractical but socially undesirable, and that a soft-determinist position — behaviour is caused but choice operates within those constraints — better fits both the science and the way society actually treats people.' Read the moving parts: a clear point, a named piece of evidence (SSRIs), an elaboration of why it matters ('this is a genuine advantage because…'), then a developed counterpoint with its own consequence ('this suggests…'), closing on a reasoned line of argument. Point, evidence, elaboration, counter-argument, conclusion — that chain, not the number of points, is what separates a Level 4 answer from a list.

Issues and debates is the synoptic topic: the debates are not a seventeenth block of content to memorise but a set of lenses you apply to everything else, and the best answers pull examples from across the specification — attachment, schizophrenia, social influence — to illustrate a point about, say, determinism or cultural bias. On Paper 3 this appears both as short AO1/AO3 questions and as the 16-mark essay (6 marks AO1 description, 10 marks AO3 evaluation), so your revision job is to hold a clear definition of each debate plus two or three named examples ready to deploy.
The 16-mark essays are marked in four bands, and the ceiling is set almost entirely by the quality of the AO3 evaluation. Level 4 (13-16 marks) rewards discussion that is 'thorough and effective', which in practice means elaborated: every evaluative point must be developed with the point, evidence, an explanation of why it matters, and ideally a counter-argument, rather than a shopping list of one-line strengths and weaknesses. Build a visible line of argument and reach a conclusion — an essay that argues towards a position outscores one that merely lists. Use the specialist vocabulary precisely (alpha bias, imposed etic, diathesis-stress, idiographic) because accurate terminology is an explicit discriminator, and where a question is a 'discuss' rather than 'outline', make sure the AO1 stays proportionate: roughly a third describing, two-thirds evaluating. Above all, avoid the caricatures — nobody is a pure determinist or pure holist — because the nuanced, interactionist position is the one the mark scheme rewards.
